Pearson Carter are working with a leading organisation that continues to expand its internal technology and infrastructure capabilities. As part of this ongoing investment, they are now seeking a highly capable Senior System Engineer to take ownership of key areas of their production environment and help drive improvements across their cloud and deployment infrastructure.
The successful candidate will play an important role in maintaining a reliable, secure and scalable technology estate. You'll be working extensively with AWS, Linux, infrastructure automation, networking, CDN and WAF platforms, monitoring technologies and modern CI/CD processes. You'll also work alongside software development and other technical teams to improve reliability, performance and operational efficiency.

Responsibilities- Take responsibility for the day-to-day operation and ongoing development of the organisation's AWS infrastructure, including EC2, VPCs, load balancing and associated networking components.
- Administer, troubleshoot and improve production Linux environments supporting a range of critical applications and services.
- Work with technologies including nginx, Apache, Redis, MariaDB/RDS, PostgreSQL and OpenSearch/Elasticsearch.
- Configure, maintain and continually optimise CDN and web application security services across Akamai and Cloudflare.
- Develop and maintain infrastructure through Terraform and Ansible, ensuring environments remain consistent, repeatable and well managed.
- Support the delivery and enhancement of CI/CD processes, including Bitbucket Pipelines.
- Monitor infrastructure performance, availability and application health using tools such as Zabbix, AWS CloudWatch, Pingdom and New Relic.
- Respond to infrastructure and production issues, carrying out detailed troubleshooting and root-cause analysis before implementing preventative improvements.
- Identify opportunities to reduce manual intervention and improve operational efficiency through scripting and automation.
- Use Python and Bash to develop tools and scripts that simplify recurring infrastructure and support tasks.
- Contribute to infrastructure resilience, security and performance improvements across the wider technology estate.
- Take part in the organisation's 24/7 out-of-hours on-call rotation.
- At least 5 years' commercial experience within a DevOps, Systems Engineering, Infrastructure or Senior Systems Administration position.
- Extensive hands-on experience supporting Linux servers and production environments.
- Strong knowledge of AWS, with practical experience across services such as EC2, VPC and load balancers.
- Experience working with production web and database technologies, including nginx, Apache, Redis, MariaDB/RDS, PostgreSQL and OpenSearch/Elasticsearch.
- Proven experience implementing infrastructure as code, particularly using Terraform.
- Practical Ansible experience and an understanding of configuration management and automated provisioning.
- Comfortable writing automation scripts using Python and Bash.
- Previous responsibility for CDN and WAF platforms, with Akamai experience being particularly beneficial.
- Good understanding of CI/CD principles and experience working with Bitbucket Pipelines or comparable tooling.
- Experience diagnosing production incidents and applying structured root-cause analysis to prevent repeat issues.
- Strong analytical and troubleshooting abilities, combined with clear communication and a practical approach to problem solving.
- Able to manage priorities effectively, work autonomously and remain calm when dealing with production-critical issues.
- Comfortable working as part of a rotating 24/7 on-call schedule.
Salary is dependent on experience and will go up to £70k.
LocationThis role is fully remote but have an office in Scotland.
