Pearson Carter are supporting an established and forward-thinking organisation specialising in the design and manufacture of sophisticated capital equipment supplied to customers across international markets. Due to continued development and investment, they are looking to appoint an experienced Software Systems Engineer to play a key role in developing, maintaining and improving the software and control systems used across both existing products and new engineering projects.

This role offers broad involvement across the software and systems engineering lifecycle, including requirements gathering, software architecture and development, machine and motion control, system testing, commissioning and integration. You will work closely with engineering and production teams to ensure software solutions meet technical, operational and customer requirements.

The position would suit a technically minded Software Systems Engineer who enjoys working on complex engineering challenges and wants to contribute to the development of specialist automation and machine-control technology within an established organisation.

• Review and interpret software requirements arising from product specifications, engineering requirements and individual customer projects.

• Work alongside product development, engineering and production teams to translate requirements into practical software solutions.

• Produce detailed software and system specifications, including interfaces, functionality and overall system behaviour.

• Design, develop and maintain software applications and control solutions using suitable programming technologies.

• Create and maintain technical documentation, including module descriptions, software designs, test plans and test procedures.

• Carry out software verification and validation activities to ensure solutions perform in accordance with agreed specifications.

• Participate in design reviews and provide technical input into software and system architecture decisions.

• Liaise with customers, end users, contractors and subcontractors to clarify requirements and resolve technical issues.

• Provide support during software installation, commissioning and integration activities, including occasional international customer-site visits.

• Diagnose and resolve software and system faults from the development and testing stages through to deployment and long-term product support.

• Implement software fixes, upgrades, modifications and enhancements in response to technical requirements and identified issues.

• Assist with knowledge transfer and provide training to colleagues where appropriate.

• Keep up to date with relevant developments in software engineering, automation and control technologies.

• Build and maintain a detailed understanding of existing and legacy control systems, with particular emphasis on VB.NET-based applications.

• Provide technical assistance to the Software Systems Manager across core software platforms and associated products.

• HND, Degree or equivalent higher-level qualification in Computer Science, Mathematics, Software Engineering or a related technical discipline.

• At least 5 years' professional experience within a commercial software development environment.

• Strong hands-on experience using VB.NET, preferably gained within an engineering, manufacturing, automation or similar technical setting.

• Demonstrable experience developing applications that communicate with or control hardware and engineering equipment.

• An understanding of, or genuine interest in, industrial automation, machine control and motion-control technologies.

• Experience interpreting software requirements and producing system specifications and associated technical documentation.

• Practical experience of software testing, fault finding, debugging and validation.

• Good understanding of the relationship between software and hardware components within complex engineering systems.

• Previous exposure to PLC-based control systems would be advantageous.

• Experience with laser control technology would be advantageous.

• Strong logical thinking and analytical skills, with the ability to break down and resolve technically complex problems.

• A methodical approach to troubleshooting, with the ability to identify root causes and implement effective solutions.

• Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the confidence to work with engineering teams, customers, contractors and other stakeholders.

Salary is dependent on experience and is competitive on the market.

This role is based in Bridgend, South Wales where you will work onsite from their office
