Pearson Carter is partnering with a well-established organisation as it continues to invest in the transformation, scalability and reliability of its technology estate. Due to ongoing growth and further investment in its infrastructure, the business is looking for a Senior DevOps/Systems Developer to join the technical function and take responsibility for the operation and ongoing improvement of its cloud and production platforms.

This is a technically hands-on position where you will be responsible for supporting and evolving a complex AWS environment, with a particular focus on Linux, infrastructure automation, networking, security and deployment technologies. You will have the opportunity to make meaningful improvements to the way infrastructure is built, managed and monitored across the organisation.

Working closely with software engineers, infrastructure specialists and other technical stakeholders, you will provide senior technical expertise across day-to-day operations as well as longer-term infrastructure initiatives. You will be expected to investigate challenging issues, improve existing processes and introduce automation wherever it can make the environment more efficient and reliable.

The position would suit an experienced DevOps, Infrastructure or Systems Engineer who enjoys solving complex technical problems and wants a high level of ownership over production infrastructure.

• Manage and develop core elements of the organisation's AWS estate, including EC2, VPC architecture, load balancers and associated networking components.
• Take responsibility for the day-to-day operation and continual enhancement of critical Linux production systems, with a strong focus on reliability, availability and performance.
• Support and administer a variety of application, caching and database technologies, including nginx, Apache, Redis, MariaDB/RDS, PostgreSQL and OpenSearch/Elasticsearch.
• Manage and enhance edge infrastructure, CDN and web security services, including platforms such as Akamai and Cloudflare.
• Build, maintain and improve Infrastructure as Code solutions using Terraform and Ansible, ensuring infrastructure can be deployed consistently and efficiently.
• Partner with development teams to improve software delivery and release processes, supporting the development and optimisation of CI/CD pipelines using Bitbucket Pipelines and similar technologies.
• Maintain effective monitoring and observability across infrastructure and applications, using platforms including Zabbix, AWS CloudWatch, Pingdom and New Relic.
• Provide senior-level technical support during major incidents and complex operational issues, leading investigations through to root-cause identification and corrective action.
• Review existing infrastructure, tooling and processes and recommend improvements that enhance resilience, scalability, security and operational efficiency.
• Identify opportunities for automation and develop tooling that reduces manual intervention and improves the consistency of operational tasks.
• Write and maintain administration, deployment and operational scripts using Python and Bash.
• Assist with infrastructure strategy and planning, including capacity management, performance optimisation, disaster recovery and security considerations.
• Collaborate with technical teams across the organisation to plan and deliver infrastructure changes with minimal disruption to production services.
• Contribute to a shared 24/7 on-call and out-of-hours support rota.

• A minimum of 5 years' commercial experience in DevOps, Systems Engineering, Infrastructure, Cloud Engineering or a closely related senior technical role.
• Strong commercial experience administering and troubleshooting Linux production environments.
• Significant hands-on AWS experience, including EC2, VPCs, networking and load-balancing technologies.
• Practical experience supporting production web, application, caching and database platforms such as nginx, Apache, Redis, MariaDB/RDS, PostgreSQL and OpenSearch/Elasticsearch.
• Strong Infrastructure as Code experience, particularly using Terraform to provision and manage cloud infrastructure.
• Practical knowledge of Ansible and configuration management or automated infrastructure provisioning.
• Proven ability to create automation and operational tooling with Python and Bash.
• Experience working with CDN and WAF technologies. Knowledge of Akamai would be advantageous.
• Understanding of modern CI/CD practices, with commercial experience using Bitbucket Pipelines or an equivalent delivery platform.
• Experience managing production incidents and conducting structured technical investigations to identify root causes and prevent recurrence.
• Strong diagnostic and problem-solving skills, with the ability to work methodically through complex infrastructure issues.
• Confident communicator who can work effectively with software developers, infrastructure teams and wider technical stakeholders.
• Demonstrated ability to take ownership of projects, work with limited supervision and manage competing technical priorities.
• Comfortable operating within a demanding production environment and responding calmly and effectively to critical technical issues.
• Willingness and ability to participate in a rotating 24/7 on-call arrangement.

Salary is dependent on experience and will go up to £70k.

This role is fully remote but have an office in Scotland.
