Job Description:

Senior DevOps Engineer

Pearson Carter is working with an established organisation that is continuing to expand and modernise its technology infrastructure. As part of this ongoing investment, the business is seeking a Senior DevOps Engineer to join its technical team and play a key role in maintaining, improving and scaling its cloud and production environments.

This is a hands-on senior position with broad technical ownership across AWS infrastructure, Linux systems, automation, networking, security and deployment platforms. You will be involved in both the day-to-day running of production services and larger-scale initiatives designed to improve the resilience, performance and efficiency of the wider technology estate.

You will work alongside software development, infrastructure and wider technology teams, providing technical leadership on complex infrastructure matters and helping to drive improvements across the environment. The role will involve troubleshooting challenging production issues, improving operational processes and identifying areas where automation can remove repetitive work and increase reliability.

This opportunity would be well suited to a Senior DevOps Engineer, Systems Engineer, Infrastructure Engineer or Cloud Engineer who enjoys working across a broad technical landscape and is comfortable taking ownership of critical production systems.

Key Responsibilities
  • Own and administer key components of the company's AWS infrastructure, covering services such as EC2, VPCs, load balancing and core networking.

  • Maintain and continuously improve Linux-based production environments, ensuring high levels of uptime, performance and operational stability.

  • Support a range of web, application, caching and database services, including nginx, Apache, Redis, MariaDB/RDS, PostgreSQL and OpenSearch/Elasticsearch.

  • Manage internet-facing infrastructure and associated security services, including CDN, WAF and edge platforms such as Akamai and Cloudflare.

  • Design, develop and maintain Infrastructure as Code using Terraform and Ansible, promoting repeatable and reliable infrastructure deployments.

  • Work closely with developers to streamline application deployments and improve CI/CD processes, including Bitbucket Pipelines and comparable tooling.

  • Develop and maintain effective infrastructure and application monitoring, alerting and observability using tools such as Zabbix, AWS CloudWatch, Pingdom and New Relic.

  • Act as a senior escalation point for significant incidents, coordinating technical investigations and ensuring root causes are understood and addressed.

  • Assess existing infrastructure and operational practices, identifying opportunities to strengthen security, scalability, resilience and performance.

  • Create automation and internal tooling to reduce manual administration and improve the reliability and repeatability of operational processes.

  • Develop and maintain scripts and utilities in Python and Bash to support system administration, deployment and infrastructure management.

  • Contribute to infrastructure roadmaps and technical planning, including capacity forecasting, disaster recovery, security and performance improvements.

  • Coordinate infrastructure changes with developers and other technical stakeholders, ensuring changes are planned and implemented with minimal impact on production.

  • Participate in a shared 24/7 on-call and out-of-hours support rota.

Experience & Technical Skills
  • At least 5 years of professional experience within DevOps, Cloud Engineering, Systems Engineering, Infrastructure or a comparable senior technical position.

  • Extensive experience managing, maintaining and troubleshooting Linux systems in live production environments.

  • Strong practical knowledge of AWS, particularly EC2, VPC architecture, networking and load-balancing services.

  • Experience administering production web servers, application platforms, caching systems and databases, including technologies such as nginx, Apache, Redis, MariaDB/RDS, PostgreSQL and OpenSearch/Elasticsearch.

  • Strong experience implementing and managing Infrastructure as Code, with particular expertise in Terraform.

  • Hands-on experience with Ansible, configuration management and automated infrastructure deployment.

  • Ability to develop effective operational automation using Python and Bash.

  • Experience working with CDN, WAF and edge security technologies; exposure to Akamai would be beneficial.

  • Good understanding of CI/CD principles and modern software delivery practices, with experience of Bitbucket Pipelines or a similar platform.

  • Proven experience handling production incidents, performing detailed troubleshooting and carrying out root-cause analysis.

  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving abilities, with a structured approach to diagnosing complex infrastructure and systems issues.

  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to work effectively across development, infrastructure and wider technology teams.

  • Comfortable taking ownership of technical initiatives, working independently and balancing multiple priorities.

  • Able to remain composed and effective when dealing with high-impact production incidents and time-sensitive technical problems.

  • Willing and able to take part in a rotating 24/7 on-call support schedule.
