Senior Developer

Apply

Job Description:

Pearson Carter is supporting a well-established organisation as it continues to invest in and expand its technology function. Due to continued growth within its engineering teams, the business is looking for a Senior Developer to join its Buying & Merchandising technology area.

In this role, you will contribute to the development of applications and platforms that underpin a number of important commercial operations. These include areas such as product information, catalogue management, purchasing, stock and inventory, pricing, promotional activity and sales reporting.

You will work across the complete development stack, combining backend development with C# and .NET alongside frontend engineering using React and TypeScript. SQL Server and Entity Framework Core will also form an important part of the technology landscape.

The wider engineering environment is built around modern cloud and distributed technologies, with teams working across microservices, event-driven systems and containerised infrastructure. Engineers operate in small, autonomous teams and follow an iterative Kanban-based delivery approach, with an emphasis on automated testing, continuous improvement, maintainable code and collaborative engineering.

This is an opportunity for a senior engineer who enjoys solving complex technical challenges and wants to have genuine ownership over the solutions they deliver. You will be encouraged to contribute to architectural and technical discussions, improve engineering practices and help less experienced members of the team develop their skills.

The role would suit someone who enjoys working across both frontend and backend development and is keen to make a tangible contribution to business-critical technology within a modern engineering environment.

Responsibilities
  • Take ownership of the design, development and ongoing enhancement of full stack applications using C#, .NET, React and TypeScript.
  • Deliver software solutions for key commercial areas including buying, merchandising, product management, stock, pricing, promotions and sales.
  • Work across existing platforms as well as modern cloud-native services, helping to evolve older systems towards more scalable architectures where appropriate.
  • Develop event-driven solutions and asynchronous processes using technologies such as RabbitMQ, MassTransit and Azure Service Bus.
  • Build and maintain secure, reliable REST APIs and backend services designed for scalability, resilience and long-term maintainability.
  • Develop and run containerised applications using Docker and Kubernetes within Microsoft Azure environments.
  • Contribute to the development and maintenance of CI/CD processes, including Jenkins-based automated build and deployment pipelines.
  • Produce high-quality React applications and reusable frontend components, including microfrontend-based solutions where they provide the right technical approach.
  • Apply sound software engineering principles, including automated testing, code review, source control and continuous integration.
  • Work collaboratively with product, technical and business stakeholders to understand problems, clarify requirements and deliver effective technical solutions.
  • Investigate complex production and development issues, identifying underlying causes and implementing sustainable fixes.
  • Contribute throughout the delivery lifecycle, from discovery and technical analysis through development, testing, deployment and ongoing support.
Experience
  • Around 6 years or more of commercial software development experience, with strong experience across C#, .NET, SQL and modern JavaScript/TypeScript.
  • A minimum of 4 years' professional experience building applications with React or a comparable modern frontend framework.
  • Demonstrable experience working as a full stack developer, with the ability to contribute confidently to both frontend and server-side solutions.
  • Practical experience developing distributed systems and implementing asynchronous or event-driven application patterns.
  • Strong understanding of microservice architectures and experience contributing to applications composed of multiple independently deployable services.
  • Proven experience creating RESTful APIs and robust backend services using modern .NET technologies.
  • Strong SQL Server experience, including relational database design, querying and data modelling.
  • Experience working within engineering teams that embrace practices such as automated testing, continuous integration, peer reviews and iterative delivery.
  • Hands-on commercial experience with Docker and Kubernetes.
  • Experience working with Microsoft Azure and deploying or supporting applications within a cloud environment would be advantageous.
  • Familiarity with Jenkins or comparable CI/CD tooling and automated software delivery pipelines.
  • Good understanding of Git-based source control and branching strategies such as GitFlow or similar approaches.
