QA Engineer

Apply

Job Description:

Pearson Carter are partnering with a growing business that is continuing to strengthen its software development capabilities. To support this ongoing investment, the organisation is seeking a QA Engineer to help ensure its applications remain dependable, user-friendly and fit for purpose.

Initially, the successful candidate will concentrate on manual testing, investigating software issues and helping the development team deliver reliable releases. Over time, there will be opportunities to take on more technical responsibilities, including contributing to code fixes, developing unit tests and supporting the introduction of automated testing solutions.

This is an excellent opportunity for someone at the beginning of their career who wants to build a solid foundation in quality assurance while developing practical programming skills. You'll work alongside experienced technical colleagues, gain exposure to different stages of the development process and have the opportunity to progress towards a more development-focused role.

If you're keen to learn, enjoy solving problems and want to develop your career in software engineering, we'd love to hear from you.

Responsibilities
  • Carry out manual testing of web-based platforms, desktop applications and API integrations to verify that software behaves as expected.
  • Create and maintain test scenarios based on functional requirements, technical specifications and user acceptance criteria.
  • Investigate software faults by reproducing reported issues, gathering evidence and documenting findings for the development team.
  • Undertake regression testing following software changes to confirm that existing features continue to operate correctly.
  • Test application functionality across different environments and identify potential usability, compatibility and performance concerns.
  • Record test outcomes, track defects and maintain clear documentation throughout the QA process.
  • Work closely with software developers, product stakeholders and other team members to resolve defects and improve product quality.
  • Develop an understanding of the C# and .NET technology stack by assisting with debugging, minor code changes and unit test development.
  • Help introduce and maintain automated checks to reduce repetitive manual testing and improve release confidence.
  • Participate in sprint planning, technical discussions and code or test reviews, contributing ideas to improve team practices.
  • Review existing testing methods and suggest practical ways to increase test coverage, efficiency and consistency.
Experience
  • Some knowledge of software testing or quality assurance, gained through employment, academic study, work placements, independent projects or relevant training.
  • A logical approach to problem-solving, with the ability to investigate unexpected behaviour and identify potential causes.
  • An understanding of how software defects affect functionality and the importance of prioritising issues according to their severity and impact.
  • Basic programming knowledge, including familiarity with object-oriented concepts such as classes, objects, inheritance and encapsulation.
  • An introductory understanding of databases, client/server architecture and how applications communicate through APIs or web services.
  • Awareness of common web technologies, including HTML, CSS, JavaScript and data formats such as JSON or XML.
  • A degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering or a related discipline, or equivalent practical knowledge developed through work experience, training or personal projects.
  • Clear communication skills and the ability to explain technical issues in a structured, understandable way.
  • A proactive attitude, willingness to learn and genuine interest in building a long-term career in software testing and development.
Desirable
  • ISTQB Foundation certification or another relevant software testing qualification.
  • Experience using development or testing platforms such as Azure DevOps, Jira, TestRail, Selenium or Playwright.
  • Exposure to C#, .NET, ASP.NET, JavaScript or SQL through study, work or personal projects.
  • Experience validating API requests and responses using tools such as Postman or Swagger.
  • Familiarity with unit testing frameworks, including NUnit, xUnit or MSTest.
  • An understanding of Agile methodologies and how testing fits into sprint-based development.
  • Basic awareness of CI/CD pipelines, automated build processes and quality checks within software delivery workflows.
